The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to increase the penalty on unauthorised hoardings from the existing Rs 10,000. The court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to amend the Chennai City Municipal Act for the same.

The court was responding to a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking removal of unauthorised banners and hoardings in the city.

An affidavit filed by the Chennai District Collector said that the Tamil Nadu capital alone had 313 unauthorised hoardings and Kancheepuram had another 52.

The Madras High Court also warned of action under criminal laws against those erecting unauthorised hoardings and banners.
