BELGAUM: Suspecting that Karnataka state continued construction work of Kalasa-Banduri Nala (canal) project to Mahadayi (Mhadei) river despite the Supreme Court order, the Goa government has pressed its officials to collect information from the project site. Both sources of Karnataka and Goa confirmed the deployment of the officials to have visual proof of the construction work said to be ongoing in Kanakumbi forest area in Khanapur taluk of the district. “Under-covered officials attached to Irrigation, Forest and Public Works Department of Goa are visiting the site and are recording the work,” official sources said. Goa is also collecting the necessary document and still photographs of the ongoing work of the project. Mahadayi river called as Mhadei in Goa originates in Karnataka but flows in Goa before joining the Arabian sea.Karnataka, with an intention to supply water to Savadatti in Belgaum district and to Hubli-Dharwad had started the project by which the inflow of Malaprabha river increases. Construction of nala and seven small bridges and barrages were also part of the project. Karnataka, in its meeting with Goa, a few months ago, also clarified that it was not completely diverting the river towards the state as Goa could get about 40 per cent of water.
