VELLORE: Malayalam film comedian Jagathy Sreekumar, popularly known as Jagathy, who is undergoing treatment at the Christian Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is showing improvement and is on the path to recovery. According to a medical bulletin issued by the hospital on Thursday, the actor is being monitored and undergoing treatment under the guidance of a team of doctors for comprehensive neurorehabilitation. CMCH Medical Superintendent Dr Jacob Jose said that Sreekumar was slowly improving and had been transferred from the intensive care unit to the ward for further treatment. The actor is presently being looked after by experts from the departments of neurology, neuro-surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation and from the surgical intensive care units attached to the hospital. His family members are with him.Sreekumar was admitted at CMC on April 12 when he was transferred from Calicut where he was undergoing treatment earlier. Sources said that he was seriously injured in a road accident at Panambra near the Calicut University at Thenhipalam in Malappuram district on March 10. The car in which he was travelling reportedly rammed into a median as the driver was negotiating a dangerous curve on the National Highway in the early morning. He sustained multiple fractures and injuries.Sreekumar and his driver were admitted to the intensive care unit of the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences in Calicut. After undergoing a series of surgeries he was transferred to CMC for further specialised treatment and physical and medical rehabilitation. According to the hospital report, he is responding to treatment and the fact that he has been moved from the ICU indicates that his health is progressing.62-year old Sreekumar, born in a family of dramatists in Thiruvananathapuram in Kerala, began his career as a dramatist before embarking on a cine career. It was while working as a medical representative in Chennai that he chanced upon the role of a comedian in Chattambi Kalyani that gave him his break. Considered one of the best comedians in the history of Malayalam films, Srikumar has acted in more than 1,100 Malayalam films, mainly in comedy roles. He has won the State government award four times in different categories. He has paired with actor Mohanlal in hit movies like Thalavattam and Kilukkam. Sreekumar’s recovery is being closely monitored by the Malayalam movie industry.
