Rebels have asked villagers to boycott panchayat elections, murdered persons were campaigning for polls
Patna: Suspected Maoists dragged six people from their homes in Deojora village, Bihar, and shot and killed them on Tuesday in apparent retaliation for defying a boycott of local elections, police said.
The men had been campaigning for panchayat elections scheduled to be held in May, said Sanjay Singh, a deputy superintendent of police. The rebels have called for a boycott of the polls, but villagers have ignored the rebel ban.
"It seems they wanted to send a message that this will be the fate of those who defy the boycott," Singh said.
The rebels set fire to the bodies before fleeing, he said.
