New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh Government was on Friday forced to withdraw an order, which said it could prosecute newspapers and TV channels if they carried 'defamatory news' against it.
However, the Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Andhra Pradesh government on a petition filed by Margdarsi Financers owned by Ramoji Rao challenging a High Court order allowing enquiries into alleged irregularities in the company under a state law.
The company had filed an appeal challenging the Andhra Pradesh High Court order refusing to stay the operation of the Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments Act (APPDF).
The matter, which came before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, however, did not pass any order on the plea about searches carried out by the state police at the offices of the company.
The company has alleged that the search, were conducted to create panic among depositors.
The court also did not passed any order on the application filed by two senior journalists N Ram and Kuldip Nayar seeking impediment into the Special Leave Petition filed by the company.
The SLP has alleged that the government order to make operational the APPDF was passed with an ulterior motive to financially destabilise the media enterprises run by Ramo Rao.
The company alleged that state government was targeting the Enadu group as it was exposing Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
