THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Palayam Muslim Jama’at Action Council has sought the intervention of the State Government in resolving the crisis the Jama’at Mosque is facing after a number of office-bearers of the Jama’at were found to be allegedly involved in misappropriation of funds. Addressing a press conference here, Mohammed Gouse, a member of the action council, said that problems have been brewing within the Jama’at owing to financial irregularities. An inquiry committee appointed by the Jama’at had found several members, including office-bearers, guilty. A former secretary had to even face disciplinary action in this regard. Based on the report by the inquiry committee, motions were presented recommending suspension of the guilty in a general body meeting held in January 2011. However, the culprits, with the help of their supporters, interrupted the meeting. In the ruckus that followed, several people suffered minor injuries. The culprits also made sure that another general body was never held so as to avert any disciplinary action.   Gouse also said that the Palayam Jama’at Mosque holds significance just for the fact that it is located near a temple and a church, as a symbol of religious harmony. Hence, even a small blemish on the reputation of the mosque would affect the whole society. This reason alone was enough to demand action from the government authorities.
