Rakul Preet Singh won the Miss India People's Choice at PFMI 2011.

Perfect - that was the first impression Rakul Preet Singh made at the Yuvan's audio launch, recently. It's popular opinion it seems, if you go by the one-lakh plus people who voted in her favour in this year's Femina Miss India pageant.

The Miss India People's Choice at PFMI 2011, who missed the title "by a slight margin", is now making her debut as an actor in Tamil with 'Yuvan'. "This is my first movie after the pageant," says the Delhi beauty, who also won the titles like Miss Fresh Face, Miss Talented, Miss Beautiful Smile and Miss Beautiful Eyes.

Rakul is no stranger to silver screen. Her film career took off in 2009 with a Kannada film 'Ghilli', in which she was paired with Gururaj Jaggesh. "I was in first year college then," she recalls.

A graduate in Maths from Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi, Rakul juggled both studies and modelling. But she kept postponing her decision to participate in the Miss India pageant as "I wanted to concentrate on my studies. Finally, I thought of giving it a try. The training I underwent for the contest was a life altering experience," adds 20-year-old beauty queen.

Rakul is one of the two heroines in 'Yuvan' and comes in the second half of the movie. But why did she choose a double heroine subject to debut in Tamil? "It's a conscious choice. I took a long break after 'Ghilli' and I was in my final year when 'Yuvan' came to me. It was a relevant subject and required minimal days. So I immediately grabbed it," she explains.

She refused offers from directors like Gautam Menon and Puri Jaghanath, as they each demanded long schedules, she says. "Now, I’m ready for everything. I also got a couple of Bollywood projects, but I denied them as the characters wouldn’t suit me."

As is the case with every newcomer these days, Rakul cannot speak Tamil. "The 'Yuvan' crew used to pull my leg and make fun of me, as I can't speak the language. But I have already come to Chennai to shoot commercials; so I felt completely at home while shooting 'Yuvan'. I’m determined to speak Tamil by the end of the next movie," she says.

Rakul's next Tamil movie is 'Thadaiyara Thakka' with actor Arun Vijay. "The shooting will start in about 10 days in Chennai," she informs.
