VELLORE: Arakkonam MLA S Ravi has come up with a suggestion for the State Government to carve out the Arakkonam constituency from Vellore district and annexe it to nearby Tiruvallur district. According to him, this would help provide better administration and improved services for the people of the constituency.A plea in this regard was made by him in the form of a memorandum to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa recently. According to him, the constituency, comprising 61 village panchayats, Arakkonam municipality and Thakkolam town panchayat are closer to Tiruvallur district than to Vellore. The present district headquarters, Vellore, is a three hour drive for the people of his constituency, while Tiruvallur can be reached in less than an hour. The MLA has also sought a government engineering college and an arts and science college in his constituency. Describing this as a long pending demand of the people of his constituency, Ravi has underlined the need for starting local government colleges, which students can easily reach without travelling long distances. His other demands include a multi-sports stadium and a motor driving school, bypass roads for Arakkonam town to enable better connectivity to Sholinghur, Tirvallur and Tiruthani towns, bridges across the Nandi and Kusasthalai rivers, electricity substations at Thanigaipolur and Arakkonam town, upgradation of the Public Health Centres (PHCs) at Mudur and Melkalathur to a 30-bedded facility, a new PHC at Arigilapasi in Nemili union, a veterinary dispensary at Ichipudur village in Kaveripakkam union and a new police station at Salai village. He has also asked for extension of Chennai Metro bus services up to Arakkonam.
