CHENNAI: With a view to improve the quality of education imparted through government schools, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday ordered the creation of 8,642 posts of graduate and post graduate teachers to ensure a teacher student ration of 1:40 during the current academic year.Of the 8,642 posts, 6,872 posts would be for graduate teachers while 1,590 posts would be for post graduate teachers. The CM earmarked `181.36 crore for the creation of graduate teacher posts while `45.25 crore would go towards the creation of PG teachers posts, an official release here said.CM Jayalalithaa also ordered special payment for the 3,137 teachers of primary schools who have retired from service.The CM directed that their service period prior to June 1, 1998 should be merged with the period after this date to provide special payment. The CM has allocated Rs 24.25 crore for this purpose.During the year 2011-12, 1,661 honorary lecturers were appointed in science and arts colleges with a consolidated payment of `6,000 per month. Considering their educational qualification and the nature of their duty, the CM announced that their consolidated payment would be hiked to Rs 10,000 per month. This would incur an additional expenditure of Rs 8 crore to the State exchequer.
