Mumbai: A Punjabi model, who was also working as an assistant director for a film, was arrested late on Friday night for allegedly killing a 25-year-old man, Mumbai police said.
The body of Vikramjit Singh Mukhtar Singh, an Amritsar resident, was found near a park in suburban Andheri's plush Lokhandwala Complex on Friday. His throat had been slit.
Police suspect Vikramjit was part of a human trafficking racket. The model, Swatantra Pal Singh Kucha Singh, had allegedly promised to send Vikramjit to Canada as a member of a film unit and told him he could stay back.
Swatantra had reportedly been paid Rs 1.5 lakh of an agreed sum of Rs 7 lakh by Vikramjit, they said.
"Swatantra did not live up to the promise even after three months of being paid the money. He had gone to Punjab for a shoot where he met Vikramjit again. Both came to Mumbai on Tuesday," Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria said.
On Wednesday evening, Swatantra and Vikramjit went out and returned to the former's rented apartment in nearby Oshiwara late at night.
Vikramjit then had an argument with Swatantra over the Canada trip which ended with the latter slitting his throat, Maria said, adding "He wrapped up the body in a blanket, dragged it out of his home, drove down till the park and abandoned it there.”
Swatantra was arrested at a multiplex. Police recovered Vikramjit’s PAN card through which the police contacted his family in Amritsar.
Swatantra has appeared in several Punjabi music videos and had recently also recorded some songs. Besides, he was assisting director in a Punjabi film Mr Singh.
