BHUBANESWAR: The Commissionerate Police on Sunday arrested three persons in connection with the brutal murder of a middle-aged man in Satya Nagar area about a week ago. Kabu Behera (39), a petty criminal, was held for allegedly murdering Niranjan Nahaka on August 22. Two others harboured him, police said. Cops tracked down Kabu from Niali area where he was allegedly sheltered by Panchanan Das and Dushasan Das. Following a raid, police recovered Niranjan’s bag from Kabu’s Bhagabati Basti house in the City. It contained voter ID cards of the deceased’s father and brother besides a picture of his with his son. The weapon of offence, a knife, was also found,  Police Commissioner Bijay Kumar Sharma said. Police said the murder took place over an attempted robbery by Kabu. Niranjan, whose family stays in Madhya Pradesh (MP), was in the City for about a fortnight. He probably took up small-time work but since he had no acquaintance here, he spent the nights on the pavements which the locals had noticed. On the fateful night, Sharma said Kabu was on his way back home when he saw Niranjan on the pavement with a briefcase. With no one around, he tried to rob him but Niranjan is believed to have offered resistance and even given him a blow or two. An angry Kabu stabbed him on the left side of the chest twice, right into the heart, killing Niranjan instantly. He took ` 500 from the deceased’s wallet and his bag but lost his mobile phone in the scuffle. Kabu hid his knife and the bag in his house and headed to Niali where he was trying to arrange money to flee the area. “Since money could not be arranged, his plans were delayed,” Sharma said. Police first mistook the mobile phone to be that of Niranjan but later found out that it belonged to Kabu and tracked him down. While Kabu has been booked under Sections 302 and 397, the two others have been charged under Section 214 of the IPC, Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh said.
