A native of Bhogadi, Mysuru, Karnataka named Ramesh has developed a portable biogas plant by productively utilising the waste kept in his kitchen and dustbin. As per Local 18 Karnataka, he uses the biogas produced in the plant for cooking purposes in his kitchen. Ramesh has been using this unconventional method for the past 4 years. Due to this alternative, Ramesh didn’t feel the need to use the gas cylinder for his kitchen. To produce the biogas for the plant installed, Ramesh kept one thousand kilograms of rice and cow dung in a drum regularly. He continued indulging in this process and then left the drum for about a month. Following this, he closed this drum with the help of another drum with a capacity of 750 litres on top of it. Then he installed a pipeline joining the drum to the kitchen and thus it is converted into methane and produced gas. The waste (cow dung and rice) is converted to methane.
The gas produced by this process is used for cooking for more than three hours every day. Leftover stale rice, broth and many other waste materials are put inside this biogas drum for the production of methane. Ramesh doesn’t face any issues in cooking food via methane production.
Biogas is a renewable fuel that’s produced when organic matter such as food or animals is broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. This process is called anaerobic digestion. For this to take place, the waste material needs to be enclosed in an environment where there is no oxygen. Biogas can occur naturally or as part of an industrial process to intentionally create it as a fuel.
Despite its share of benefits, biogas can turn hazardous as well in a few cases. This renewable fuel comprises impurities and is less suitable for dense metropolitan areas as well. The systems used in the production of biogas are not efficient as well.
