The Gandhi Ashram in Thiruchengodu in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu was started to advocate alcohol abstinence in Pudupalayam village, support village industries, and Khadar production. It also focuses on propagating the programs of Mahatma Gandhi. It was founded by C Rajagopalachari, this Gandhi Ashram was inaugurated in 1925 by EV Ra Periyar. This Ashram was founded by Pudupalayam Zamindar B. K. This Gandhi Ashram was started in a garden donated by Ratnasabapati Gounder.
C Rajagopalachari, also known as Rajaji, lived with his younger son and daughter for many years in one of the cottages in the ashram since its inception. This Gandhi Ashram has completed 100 years now. The people visiting the Gandhi Ashram have demanded that steps be taken to make it look majestic.
C Rajagopalachari later became the governor of this ashram. Actor K Santhanam and writer Kalki Krishnamurthy stayed and served at this ashram for several years. Apart from this, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajendra Prasad stayed at this ashram. Their attendance has also been recorded in the register of the ashram.
While leaving, they also recorded their experience of staying in the ashram in the register. Even today this attendance record is kept safe in the Gandhi Ashram for public viewing. In this case, this Gandhi Ashram has completed 100 years. Collector Uma issued a statement praising this. In this ashram, clothing items such as Khadar cloth, silk cloth and mattresses along with perfumery items such as bath soap and blowtorch are produced.
Agricultural products such as neem, neem oil, kerosene oil, lamp oil and shea leaf along with industrial goods such as iron and beds etc. are produced. As a result, many villagers around this ashram are getting job opportunities through this, said district collector Uma in her statement.
Gandhi Ashram can be visited daily from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Visitors can visit the ashram for free without paying any fee. The people visiting the Gandhi Ashram have demanded that steps be taken to make it look majestic and that the memories of the freedom fighters should be itched in the registers of the Ashram.
