BANGALORE: Keeping the furore against corruption alive, former Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde pointed out that there is a growing need to build a morally strong society in the country. Speaking at the Onam Celebrations organised by Kerala Samajam on Sunday, Cantonment division, he said that every time a person chooses to be corrupt, he becomes a little less human.Laying down some basic facts about the extent of corruption in the country, he said, “Out of the total funds allocated for any project, only 15 per cent actually reaches the project for the completion of the work.” He recounted his five year experience as the Lokayukta of the state which brought him face to face with massive irregularities that had gone unnoticed. With his report on the mining scam throwing light on the massive mishandling of money, Hegde said that there are many more scams waiting to be uncovered. “With foreign illegal deposits worth $1,456 billion stashed away in Swiss Banks and with 30 other such tax havens, one can only imagine the extent of corruption in that has remained in the country,” he said.
