The Election Commission is looking at ways to improve voter turnout during polls by, among others, including differently-able and homeless people in the exercise, officials said at the conclusion of a two-day meet here in Agra of election officers of states and Union territories.

Talking to reporters upon the conclusion of the 'Systematic Voter Educational and Electoral Participation II' programme, Akshay Raut, Director General of the Election Commission of India, said that although voter turnouts had successively increased, more people needed help to be able to exercise their franchise.

He said that with a view to the above, studies would be conducted in 10 per cent of the lowest turnout areas of every state to discover the factors preventing greater participation in the polling process.

Earlier, addressing the meet, Election Commissioner HS Brahma stressed on the urgent need to increase the voting percentage, especially in view of the fact that 26 per cent of the Indian voters were illiterate.

Meanwhile, responding to a query, Brahma said that no mid-term polls were envisaged and the General Elections would be held as per schedule some time in May next year.
