CHENNAI: The new Assembly and Secretariat buildings are not suitable for establishing a medical hospital and college, senior counsel P Wilson has told a division bench of the Madras High Court. When the arguments on a public interest writ plea from advocate R Veeramani of MKB Nagar commenced before the Bench comprising Justices D Murugesan and K K Sasidharan on August 30, Wilson submitted that 60 per cent of the buildings, built at a cost of Rs 552 crore against the estimate of over Rs 1,000 crore, was not fit for housing a hospital and college. The design was such that it could accommodate only the Assembly, the Secretariat and other offices. The decision of the government to abandon the high value project at the fag end smacked with mala fides and it was a colourable exercise of power. It would also amount to abuse and misuse of power vested with the government, Wilson added.Earlier, when the matter came up before the Bench on August 19 last, the bench told Wilson that unless the petitioner made a representation to the government, the petition could not be maintained. Accordingly, the petitioner made a representation opposing the decision of housing the hospital and college on August 22 and produced a copy of the same before the bench on August 30.Granting time to Advocate General A Navaneethakrishnan to get instructions as to whether such representation had been received, the Bench adjourned the matter till September 9 with a direction to him to inform the court as to what action was taken on the representation.
