KOCHI: Induction of a new clause in the prospectus for the admission to this year's professional degree course was related to introducing reforms in engineering entrance examination, the state government informed the High Court. The government said this in the counter affidavit filed on a petition challenging the new clause.
As per the new clause, the marks obtained by candidates in the qualifying examination would also be considered in addition to the marks obtained in the common entrance examination. The petition was filed by Shaheeda Kaithal of Kozhikode, the mother of an engineering aspirant. According to her, the inclusion of the new clause by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations was arbitrary and illegal. The attempt to introduce reforms in entrance exams started way back in 2006 when the government constituted a committee to study the existing system and to suggest reforms. The committee recommended that multiple choice question type examination was inadequate to make a comprehensive assessment of the students. The committee further recommended equal weightage must be given to marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
