Students in Maharashtra are celebrating 'no bags day' as they celebrate birth anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam as 'Reading Day'. Urging students to read non-academic books in school as well, the students have been asked to leave their school bags at home.

The decision to celebrate October 15 as 'Reading Day' was taken by State Education Minister Vinod Tawde soon after Kalam's death in July. In a government resolution, the state has asked all schools to host book exhibitions and implement a gift a book programme.

"I would like to learn from his life. Rather than bookish knowledge, we should be taught about lives of great people," he said.

Bharat Ratna awardee Kalam, who passed away on July 27, 2015 was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. Before becoming the President, Kalam had spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

He was involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts, earning him the title of 'Missile man'.
