THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: Rumours of a hartal or general strike on Tuesday, which had gathered momentum, were scotched on Monday evening with major trade unions making it clear that there is no move for it.Media houses were flooded with calls for the past two days and it reached a crescendo on Monday afternoon, for confirmation by eager public. Major trade unions CITU, BMS and INTUC have made it clear that the proposed ‘fill the jail’ agitation to be held on Tuesday will not be accompanied by the general strike. INTUC state president and Trade Union Co-ordination Council secretary R Chandrasekharan said in a statement that workers will only take out demonstrations at 14 district centres.BMS state general secretary K K Vijayakumar said that the Sangh had not given any call for a hartal or general strike in the state. “Somehow a misunderstanding was created among the people. With the unprecedented price rise and hike in fuel prices, people might have been mentally prepared for the strike,’’ he felt. However, the BMS will organise demonstrations and stage dharnas at the district centres. BMS will also organise a Secretariat march on November 10, he said.CITU state secretary M M Lawrence said in Kochi that CITU will not observe any dharna or strike on Tuesday. Then how did the rumour gather momentum? Since Tuesday had been declared as a holiday for all educational institutions in the state, next to Monday’s Bakrid holiday, government employees are in a holiday mood. As for traders, the issue was from the safety point of view.
