No Onam celebration for Sruthis family
No Onam celebration for Sruthis family

For Sreekanth, and his family, this Onam will not bring joy to their home because the very next day after Onam, he will be entering the fourth month of the mournful remembrance of his daughter.

Sruthi, a nursing student and daughter of Sreekanth and Bindu of Gopika house, Kudamaloor, attempted suicide on April 17 following the denial of an education loan from a private bank and succumbed to injuries on April 30.

Though the incident triggered protests among the public against the intricacies of getting education loans, along with marches held by the youth wings of some political organisations to the branches of the bank, justice still evades her family.

The government has given `1 lakh as compensation to the family, but no further assistance was lent by the authorities.

Though, there were promises that Sruthi’s brother will be given a government job following the incident, no steps have been initiated in this regard.

“We have filed a request to the Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan for getting a government job for my son shortly after my daughter’s death.

However, when we later contacted the authorities concerned, we were informed that it has been sent for the consideration of the Chief Minister, and that they are awaiting the permission from there,” said Sreekanth.

He added that Thiruvanchoor even denied permission to meet him when the minister came to a place for a function near Sreekanth’s residence.

The police also did not give justice to the family by not submitting the chargesheet for months after the incident.

“It is heard that the police have almost completed the inquiry. However, we think that some foul play has occurred in the final stage of investigation.

The police are trying to put the blame on my daughter, especially after they went to Tirupathi, where Sruthi joined the B Sc nursing course.

They said that there were over four students who had not paid their fees even for three years, which is against the facts,” he said.

However, West police station Circle Inspector A J Thomas, who is leading the inquiry, has denounced the allegations.

“The investigation is on the right track, and we expect to submit the chargesheet by the end of this month. We have arrested two persons in connection with the incident,” he said.

G S Harikrishnan, manager of the Pulinchuvadu branch of HDFC Bank, where Sruthi had applied for the loan, and Kodungoor Thoppil Jobin, manager of the Shastri Road branch, who was responsible for giving the nod for the loan, are the first and second accused, respectively.
