New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the Parliament on Friday that Iran's nuclear programme has serious implications for India's security.
Speaking in Parliament, the PM said the source of Iran's nuclear equipment appears to be clandestine and sourced from India's neighbourhood.
Seeking restraint and flexibility on the Iran nuclear issue, the Prime Minister said India will support diplomatic efforts in the run up to the IAEA meeting in March to reach an amicable solution.
"We will support diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue. we have a strong and good relations with Iran and we would like to take the relation forward that is mutually beneficial," he asserted.
He said India's vote at the IAEA was in line with international consensus.
The PM, however, said being a signatory to the NPT Iran has a legal right to develop its own nuclear programme.
"Some questions have remained unsolved about Iran's nuclear programme," Dr Singh said, adding: "Our approach has been consistent based on mutual acceptable compromises We have tried to promote consensus in IAEA on Iran's nuclear programme."
