KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Monday granted bail to an accused in the controversial palm-chopping case. A Division Bench comprising Justice A K Basheer and Justice P Q Barkath Ali granted bail to Moitheen Kutty, the 26th accused. However, the court rejected the bail plea of Shiyas, the 13th accused in the case. Both petitioners approached the HC challenging the dismissal of their bail application by the CBI Special court. Passing the order, the court observed that a group of people of a particular religion got carried away by fanaticism. "These so-called lovers of religion seem to have forgotten that they live in a country which gives them the freedom to practice their religion," the court observed.Moitheen Kutty was arraigned as an accused for providing shelter to another accused in the case. Shiyas was charged for organising protest meetings against the arrests and for mobilising funds. The charge against Shiyas seems to be more serious than those against Moitheen Kutty. T J Joseph, a teacher at Newman College, Thodupuzha, was attacked in Muvattupuzha on July 4, 2010, by a gang alleging blasphemy against Islam.
