Outrage over outage blocks Tiruvallur Road

Tension prevailed when police resorted to a lathi charge and dispersed protestors at Tiruvallur when they held a road blockade on the main road on Monday protesting prolonged power outage. Five persons, including an elderly woman, suffered injuries.

Police said about 250 residents of Pathiyal Pettai, JN Salai, Jaya Nagar and Kannadasan Nagar took to the streets and staged a road blockade at Kakkalur Bypass Road on Monday morning demanding uninterrupted power supply.

The protestors claimed that they had been suffering extended power cuts for about 18 hours a day. The protest led to a traffic jam as vehicles on the road lined up for about one kilometre. Vehicles leading to Tirupathi, Tiruttani, Poonamallee, Sriperumbadur and Avadi were stuck in the pile up. Soon, police and local authorities arrived at the scene and assured the villagers of action and asked them to disperse. But the protestors were not convinced by the assurances and stayed put, police sources said.

As they continued their protests, the police resorted to a lathi charge and dispersed the crowd. An elderly woman, Thiruveni, and four other protestors, including Sumathy, Saroja and Shanmugam, sustained injuries and were rushed to Tiruvallur Government Hospital, police said. Sources said similar protests took place in other parts of Tiruvallur as well.  A group of residents protested near a bridge on the way to Manavalan Nagar around 1 am on Monday and traffic towards Sriperumbudur and Poonamallee was disrupted. The protest followed power cuts in the area on Sunday night.
