New Delhi: Pakistan has said it cannot arrest Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed – linked by India to the Mumbai terror attacks – since there is no proof of his involvement in the 26/11 assault.
Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the Indian government should provide substantial proof against Saeed, as he cannot be arrested merely on statements.
“Ajmal Kasab is non-state actor from Pakistan. India should also tell us who provided mobiles, SIMs and other logistics to Kasab. India still has not given proof against Hafiz Saeed on our continuous request. We cannot take action against him just on the basis of statements,” Malik said.
Malik also spoke about the inclusion of the Baloch issue in the Indo-Pak Joint Declaration. He said that this is proof enough of India's involvement in subversive activities against Pakistan and that evidence in this regard will be disclosed at international forums at the appropriate time
“The inclusion of Balochistan in the joint declaration is itself a proof that India knows everything,” he said.
Saeed was placed under house arrest in December last year after the UN Security Council declared the JuD a front for the banned Lashker-e-Taiba. Saeed was freed from detention on the orders of the Lahore High Court on June 2.
The federal and Punjab governments challenged his release in the Supreme Court earlier this month.
However, the Punjab provincial government has said it could withdraw from the appeal as the federal government had not provided sufficient evidence against Saeed
Five LeT operatives, including operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, arrested by Pakistani security agencies are currently facing trial in an anti-terror court for alleged involvement in the Mumbai attacks.
