Islamabad: The Pakistan Government on Saturday ordered three journalists of Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper to leave the country within 72 hours, accusing them of using "abusive" and "foul language" against the country and its leadership.
The action was taken against Isambard Wilkinson, Colin Freeman and Damien McElroy under Emergency regulations for using "foul and abusive language against Pakistan and the Pakistani leadership", state-run PTV reported.
President Pervez Musharraf imposed strict curbs on the print and electronic media after imposing Emergency on November 3.
Journalists who publicise the statements of militants or write or broadcast anything that defames or ridicules the Government and Pakistani leaders can be punished with jail terms or stiff fines.
Pakistani and foreign TV news channels were taken off the air hours after Emergency was declared.
This is the first instance of the Government taking action against foreign journalists posted in Islamabad under the new regulations.
