Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday described as false and misleading media reports that the Pakistani spy agency ISI had financed the Bangladesh's main opposition BNP during the 1991 general election in the country.
Referring to reports in sections of the Bangladeshi media that former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Asad Durrani had admitted that the spy agency had financed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1991, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said these news reports were "not only totally baseless but also part of mischievous efforts to damage the brotherly and mutually beneficial Pakistan-Bangladesh relationship".
"Pakistan strictly adheres to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs of other countries and it would be ill-advised to give credence to such false, misleading and self-serving stories," he said in a statement.
Durrani has been at the centre of a controversy over the distribution of funds by the ISI to Pakistani political parties before the 1991 general election in Pakistan.
The Supreme Court has resumed hearing a 16-year-old case against the funding of politicians by the ISI.
The former ISI chief recently admitted in the apex court that he had distributed money provided by banker Yunus Habib among politicians.
