Pakistan ?willing? to open LoC for quake relief
India hails Pakistan?s proposal, announces free telephone links for quake victims.

New Delhi: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is willing to open the Line of Control (LoC) to intensify quake relief work but said implemention of the proposal will have to be worked out.

"We will allow any amount of people coming across the LoC to meet their relatives and assist with the reconstruction effort," Musharraf told reporters on a visit to Muzaffarabad.

"We have only seen news reports. If indeed this is what has been said, India welcomes the remarks," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told PTI.

He said the proposal was "in line with India's advocacy of greater movement" across the LoC.

Maintaining that India was "willing to facilitate the movement" across the LoC, Sarna said, New Delhi would "wait for a word from Pakistan about the practical dimension of implementing this intention."

India has always been in favour of greater people-to-peolple contacts, he added.

Sarna pointed out that New Delhi had earlier proposed five meeting points for divided families along the LoC and other cross-LoC confidence building measures.

India announced a free telephone link on Tuesday to facilitate communication between the residents of Kashmir and their relatives in Pakistan.

A foreign ministry statement said four Department of Telecommunication centres would remain open in Jammu and Kashmir for a fortnight from Wednesday.

"This facility is being provided as a special case, on the directions of the Prime Minister," the statement added.
