New Delhi: Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned for a while on Thursday morning before presentation of the Railway Budget -- Lok Sabha over Parliamentary Affairs Naidu's comments on the Opposition while the Rajya Sabha over RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's remarks about Mother Teresa.
As soon as the Lok Sabha convened, Naidu clarified that his remarks were not intended to hurt the sentiments of the Opposition members. He tried to pacify the Opposition over his remarks made in Parliament on Wednesday. He had made a pun on Congress and allegedly taken a dig at party vice-president Rahul Gandhi's leave to introspect.
Naidu said, "I have not used any unparliamentary language. I just spoke on what was in the past and present. I respect all leaders and parties."
He told the Opposition that there should be no misunderstanding. He said he had raised only facts about the Ordinance and his intention was not to hurt. Though the Minister also said he always respected the Opposition, he stopped short of apologising to the Opposition.
However, the Opposition demanded an apology from him. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge said Naidu is a senior minister he should have taken everyone along and said he should express regret for his remarks. There was uproar in the Lower House after which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned it for a few minutes.
In the Rajya Sabha, Trinamool Congress (TMC) protested over Naidu's remarks as well as Bhagwat's comments on Mother Teresa. TMC MP Derek O Brien said all opposition parties met in the morning and decided that they would not allow the rail budget be presented till the time government apologised for Naidu's remarks.
