KOCHI: As an aftermath of the clash on Monday between Youth Congress and DYFI activists, a 12 hour hartal was observed in Vennala region on Tuesday. The shops and educational institutions were closed down and the entire region was under police cover. Medical shops were exempted from the hartal. “No violence was reported from the area. Though both the groups had asked permission for taking out protest rallies, it was not granted,” said Sunil Jacob, Assistant Police Commissioner. More than 50 police personnel led by North circle inspector have been keeping close tab on the situation and no violence had been reported.Violence broke out on Monday night when DYFI members protested against a Youth Congress meeting being held at the junction. It is allegedly said that a Youth Congress leader made a provoking speech against which the DYFI activist took out protest march that led to violence. Both the activists threw stones at each other and electricity in the area was switched off. The protestors damaged the police jeep belonging to the Palarivattom police station and four policemen were injured in the clash. Sub-inspector and four policemen were the only one present at the spot as most of the police personnels were diverted to the High Court junction as a precaution against the police action on SFI activist in Kozhikode on Monday. Following the incident, police officials including Sunil Jacob, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ernakulam and D S Suneesh Babu, Circle Inspector, Town Central, reached Vennala. A big police contingent from different police stations also joined and handled the situation. No arrest has been made in this regard. The police have charged a case for damaging police vehicle and public property. The injured activists were taken to district hospital and police have registered their statement.
