BANGALORE: With vehicle population crossing 40 lakh in Bangalore, there's little space left for pedestrians. People on Monday assembled at many of the traffic junctions, footpaths demanding pedestrian rights. Members from organisations such as Hasiru Usiru, Kili Kili along with the  local residents assembled at various places  including near Sankey Tank gate (Malleswaram side), Bhashyam Circle, Bellary Road (near Princess Academy), Bellary Road (Airforce Station, Hebbal after Mekhri Circle underpass) and  Lingarajapuram (near St. Charles School).Speaking to City Express, Sridhar Raman from Hasiru Usiru said that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is into widening roads, making roads signal-free and building flyovers and underpasses. “Roads are public spaces. They belong to the pedestrian and the cyclist, as much as they do to vehicle users. Though pedestrians are the majority road users, there is no concern for them. We hope to make Bangalore — a pedestrian-friendly city,’’ he said. He said that more than 50 per cent of Bangaloreans use walking as primary mode of transport. Though there are subways, sky-walk for pedestrians to cross roads, they are either not usable or difficult for senior citizens, physically challenged and children. .
