MALKANGIRI: Unable to bear the pangs of poverty, a 21-year-old woman on Wednesday tried to sell her one-year-old daughter Rani for just ` 500. The woman Santoshi Bauri is a resident of Gunupur in Rayagada district. She tried to sell her baby to Keshab Sisha of Bimarangini village under Sindhrimal gram panchayat under Malkangiri police limits. However, apprehending police action, Sisha approached the local cops to ascertain the legal consequences of the act. Police later intervened and handed over the child back to Santoshi. Police said the woman was married to Sujit Roy of MV-14 in Malkangiri district two years back. Roy, however, deserted her and the infant recently. Even Santoshi’s in-laws refused to accept her. Forced into struggle for survival, Santoshi tried to take up sundry jobs but failed. Though a local NGO Swadhara came to her rescue, she left the shelter house of the organisation on Tuesday morning without informing any of the authorities. Alleging that she was being harassed by the NGO officials, Santoshi said she opted to move out of the shelter house unable to “bear the torture”. The police, however, handed her over to the NGO again after preliminary investigation. A few months back, Maina Khara of Balimela Town had also tried to sell her two grandsons driven by poverty.
