The Madhya Pradesh Police on Monday lathicharged ABVP activists protesting against an invitation extended as the chief guest to Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav by a local university for its convocation ceremony in Jabalpur.
"The activists are opposed to Rani Durgawati University's invitation to Yadav alleging that the name of his OSD Dhanraj Yadav has figured in the state Professional Examination Board (PEB) scam," ASP Amrendra Singh told reporters.
However, the OSD has already resigned from his post soon after his name cropped up. Singh said police used only "mild lathicharge" so as to disperse the gathering before the Governor's arrival at the scene and 40 students were taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the state organising secretary of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad Upendra Dhakad alleged that police used force without issuing any warning. He claimed four students sustained injuries in the police action. However, police denied the charge.
