KOCHI: As Kochi topped the list of metros with highest crime cases in the country, the credit for being active and making major breakthrough in all the cases goes to the police. It is due to the police alert that most of the crime cases are being reported and several culprits are getting arrested.The noted crimes registered this year includes Apple A Day property scam in which around 183 people were cheated after making them pay for the construction of apartments. The police had arrested three persons, including the chairman of the company. They were recently given bail by the Judicial First Class Magistrate.Crimes against women are on a rise in the city. The noted crime was the assault of a woman techie and her friend who were on their way to office by a seven-member gang at Kakkanad here on last Sunday. Thasni Banu who works in an IT company near Info Park, Kakkanad, was approached by a group of people who showered abuses and assaulted her.The ganja and ampule seizure cases are the ones that were most reported in the city. With police active in snatching the junkies, more than 50 such cases have been registered this year. A major ganja seizure was registered this year from Palluruthy where police arrested two persons with more than 100 kg ganja.Around 50 theft cases were also registered in the city and in almost every case police took the culprits into custody. The gambling cases are also high in the city compared to other cities, as police have arrested several persons from the suburban areas of the city. Around Rs 50,000 was seized and more than 20 persons were arrested.Another noted crime was the diversion of the LPG cylinders for illegal purpose. Police arrested several people including mafia in this connection.Murder cases have declined compared to last year as this year three cases have been reported which had an involvement of migrant labours. The police also arrested many fake agents recruiting people to other countries and dubious real estate mafia, massage parlours functioning for homosexuals, sexually exploiting the under age children including boys and driving buses under the influence of alcohol.
