Nettapakkam (Pondicherry): High drama, action and emotion, that's what elections are all about. But what if the contenders are relatives or even worse, brothers?
This is the third time that V Vythialingam and Muthunarayana Reddiar — sons of former chief minister, V Venkatasubbha Reddiar of Pondicherry — are contesting for the same Nettapakkam constituency in Pondicherry.
However, the brothers prefer to call it a clash between two political ideologies rather than sibling rivalry.
"It's not personal fighting, it's a political fighting," ex-chief minister and candidate Nettapakkam (Congress), V Vythialingam said.
"It's not a political problem. It is a problem between brothers, a former chief minister and an ordinary citizen," candidate, Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC), Muthusamy Reddiar said.
Vythialingam has won from Nettapakkam five times and has even served as the chief minister in 1990.
Vythialingam justifies the war between the two brothers saying, "Even within a family, husband and wife differ in their political ideologies. Then why not between brothers?"
Younger brother, Muthunarayana Reddiar is, however, clear about his political ambition — to bring his elder brother down.
"Most people contest elections hoping to become an MLA or an MP someday. But I just contest to bring him down from power," Muthunarayana Reddiar said.
So, whether it is sibling rivalry or a clash of political ideologies, the contest between the two brothers, will be worth watching.
