PUDUCHERRY: Archbishop Dr Salvatore Pennacchio, the Vatican Ambassador to India, graced the function here held to mark the post centenary silver jubilee celebration of the Canonical Erection of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore on Thursday.The celebration was marked by a Eucharistic Concelebration, which was presided over by Dr Pennacchio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India.Hundreds of Catholic faithful congregated at the Uppalam Petit Seminaire School Grounds for the function. Bishops, Dr Devadoss Ambrose (Tanjore), Dr Singarayon (Salem), Joseph Irudayaraj (Dharmapuri), Archbishop of Pondicherry, Antony Anandarayar and Archbishop Emiritius Michael Augustine along with 250 priests were present at the ceremony. The celebrations were carried out under the chairmanship of Archbishop of Pondicherry Antony Anandarayar in collaboration with a committee.Pondicherry is one of the seven original archdioceses of India set up on September 1, 1886 by Pope Leo XIII.The celebration was held to recall the significant events in the history of the Archdiocese for the past 125 years.Today, the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore has about 3,80,000 Catholics in Pondicherry, Karaikal, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu. It has 10 Vicariates and 103 parishes. During the ceremony, Dr Salvatore Pennacchio released a compilation of the history of Archdiocese. An I Pod and Mobile Android version of the book was also “touch opened” by him.
