Mumbai: In a major bureaucratic reshuffle within the Maharashtra government, Praveen Pardeshi, an IAS officer of 1985 batch, has been appointed as the chief of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. He replaces Ajoy Mehta, who has been appointed as the state’s new chief secretary.
Pardeshi had been holding the position of additional chief secretary to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and has been an important member of his core team since 2014.
The 57-year-old bureaucrat was initially brought in as principal secretary when Fadnavis took charge and soon became the additional chief secretary.
Known as a trusted and efficient officer in the present state government, Pardeshi recently played a crucial role in coordinating the state’s relief efforts to Kerala during floods last year.
He held posts in departments such as Revenue and Forest in the past and was among the frontrunners for the post of civic chief. Pardeshi will take charge as the municipal commissioner on Monday.
Mehta, an IAS officer of 1984 batch, has succeeded UPS Madan to become the chief secretary. Mehta had been holding the position of civic chief since April 2015.
