New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil has signed the ordinance dissolving the tainted Medical Council of India on Saturday. After a scam worth crores was exposed, an expert panel of eminent doctors will now take over the functioning of the MCI.
The new panel includes Dr Ranjeet Ray Chaudhary, Dr Sareen, Dr Sita Naik, Dr Gautam Sen, Dr Salhan and Dr Devi Shetty.
The Union government had decided on Thursday in principle to dissolve the council and set up a panel of eminent doctors to take over its functioning temporarily following the resignation of Ketan Desai, the mastermind of the big medical scam, from the post of President of the MCI. He was replaced by two of his close aides, one of them even had faced a CBI probe.
Desai's resignation did not come as a surprise as the tainted doctor's underhand deals have been making headlines since his arrest by the CBI on the April 22 last when he was caught taking a bribe of Rs 2 crore.
