Opposition AIADMK on Monday demanded Lt Governor Virendra Kataria to intervene and prevent the 'collapse' of a cooperative sugar mill and other such institutions in the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters in Puducherry , AIADMK local unit convenor A Anbalagan alleged the sugar mill was on the verge of closure due to poor management, wrong planning and failure to settle dues to farmers, staff and employees for several months.
No step had been taken by government to save the mill, the only undertaking in the cooperative sector, he said.
With the quantum of sugarcane supplied every year falling fast and crushing coming down, farmers were diverting crop to private mills and to Tamil Nadu. More than 500 cooperative institutions did not have elected bodies, he said and sought Kataria's intervention to ensure the societies functioned properly and they should be prevented from facing closure.
Anbalagan said the administration was not handling the situation in right perspective.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy should spell out the government stance on the Food Security Bill.
The Centre was seeking to edge out a major chunk of population from the Food Security Bill and it should be opposed tooth and nail, he said.
