Varanasi: The main suspect in the Mumbai twin murder case, Shivkumar Rajbhar alias Sadhu, who was arrested by the UP police in Varanasi has confessed to his crime on Monday.
According to sources, Sadhu and one of his accomplices were arrested by a UP Special Task Force (STF) team and during interrogation Sadhu allegedly confessed his role in killing a Mumbai based artist Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani.
"I gagged Hema and her lawyer. There is another person named Vidya Rajbhar is involved in the crime. He asked me to kill them," Sadhu reportedly told police in his confessional statement.
Sadhu, a metal fabrication artist, is believed to be the last person with whom Hema had spoken to before she mysteriously disappeared on Friday evening.
Several ATM cards of Hema, her estranged husband Chintan Upadhyay and her lawyer have been recovered from Sadhu, a top UP STF official said.
Mumbai police claimed that it was Sadhu who called up Hema on Friday evening suggesting that he has evidence against her estranged husband. Hema agreed to meet him and on Saturday morning her body along with her lawyer Harish were found dumped in cardboard boxes in a drain.
Replying to a question by a journalist on why he killed the artist and her lawyer, Sadhu said, "I have decided to eliminate them after being told by my seth ji (boss). He asked for my help in killing them."
When asked to reveal the name of his boss, Sadhu said, "His name is Vidya Rajbhar.' Vidya is absconding and it was learnt that Vidya is Sadhu's relative and he used to work under Hema's estranged husband Chintan.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that they were killed inside a metal fabrication unit in Mumbai and at least 5-6 people were involved in the crime. The assailants took help of an auto-rickshaw driver to disposed the body. A massive hunt has been launched to arrest rest of the accused persons.
While narrating the execution of Hema and Harish, he said, "I put something in handkerchiefs and stuffed it inside their mouth. After the job was over, I came to Varanasi."
One of the eyewitnesses in the case, Anmol told CNN-IBN that the bodies were completely wrapped. "Harish's face was covered with a cloth. His hands and legs were tied. Woman's body not covered and I noticed blood oozing out of her mouth," he said.
He will be handed over to Mumbai police team which has already arrived in Varanasi. The Mumbai police will probably produce him in court on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Hema's estranged husband Chintan was picked up on suspicion for interrogation by the Mumbai police.
In 2013, Hema had filed a complaint of harassment against Chintan alleging that that some of his paintings in their Juhu home showed women in an obscene light and were drawn to humiliate her. Then, Harish had represented her case.
On Saturday evening, a sweeper noticed two boxes in a drain next to a crematorium in the Dhanukar wadi area. He immediately alerted the Kandivali police and later the bodies have been identified as those of Hema and her lawyer Harish.
