BHUBANESWAR: The Higher Education Department has cracked the whip on college teachers engaged in private tuition and coaching. Asking the teachers to refrain from such activities, the Department has shot off a letter to principals of all government colleges entrusting them with the responsibility of monitoring. Higher Education Director BP Nanda instructed that all teachers must submit an undertaking at the beginning of the academic session stating they are not engaged in any form of private teaching and coaching. “The principals will release the salary from September onwards only on receipt of such undertaking,” the letter said. Despite warnings, the Department said college teachers were found to be engaged in private tuition and coaching which vitiates the academic atmosphere of the institutions. Principals of all Government colleges are asked to be vigilant and ensure that no teacher indulges in private classes. The principals have also been asked to submit a compliance report to the Department through the e-space (portal of the Department). If any teacher is found involved in the illegal activity of conducting private tutorial and coaching, his or her name will be reported to the Department and stringent action taken. The trend of private tuition by government college teachers is not new and had been banned by the Government earlier in 2003 and 2005 through separate circulars.
