New Delhi: The Congress is likely to formally announce Priyanka Gandhi as its campaign in-charge in Uttar Pradesh this week, sources said on Tuesday,
A top source told CNN-News18 that the annoucement might come on Tuesday or immediately after Eid. The strategy was finalised in a meeting which the party's UP incharge Ghulam Nabi Azad had with party president Sonia Gandhi and vicepresident Rahul Gandhi.
"When it is in the realm of speculation, I don't want to add to it. Let's wait for 48 hours. The big bang announcement is expected in 48 hours on all TV channels. As an offical spokesperson I cannot tell anything. Neither can I confirm anything," Congress leader Tom Vadakkan said.
The idea was first mooted by election strategist Prashant Kishor and it soon gained circulation in party circles after CNN-News18 reported it.
Sources also said Priyanka has said no to the idea of an advertising agency being given charge of her campaign for the UP polls scheduled to be held next year. All these years, she has never campaigned outside the family bastions.
Political observers see Priyanka's entry into active politics as a sign that she is being groomed for a bigger role ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Both Rahul and Priyanka will campaign aggressively across the state, and younger Congress faces will be roped in.
