PUDUCHERRY: The open house conducted as part of Vigilance Awareness Week jointly by Pondichery Planning Authority (PPA), Slum Clearance Board (SLB) and Pondicherry Housing Board (PHB) was postponed after protests by the participants over the non-participation of Secretary to the government.As soon as the officials assembled for the open house, here on Tuesday, the participants demanded the presence of Secretary to the government in charge of PPA, PHB and SLB who is also the vigilance officer. In reply to the protests, officials said that they had been directed by the Secretary to conduct the open house and report the proceedings to him. However, the participants refused to accept the answer and staged a dharna in the hall, shouting slogans in support of their demand.Their contention was that there were several issues which were beyond the capacity of the officials present to provide an answer or take corrective action. Moreover, they charged that there were certain issues against the officers chairing the meeting and said that the vigilance awareness week was not being conducted as per the guidelines given by the Central Vigilance Commission.Finally, an assurance was given by the Secretary and Collector SB Deepak Kumar, based on which the officers announced that the meeting has been postponed to a later date. It would be made known after finding a convenient time when the Collector would be able to attend the meeting.
