Water politics over Cauvery has one again taken centre stage between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery delta farmers are not happy about the act of officials to reduce water discharge from the Kabini.
Farmers in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur expressed their disappointment about the protests by ryots in Karnataka. Swamimalai Vimalanathan of Cauvery Delta Farmers Protection Association said, “it has become an annual affair for Karnataka to deny the due share of water to TN.”
Pointing out the difference between 2004 and 2012 protests by Karnataka farmers, he said in 2004, the then S M Krishna-led government in Karnataka declined to enact the SC order. Now, the government has consented to obey, but the farmers are opposing the water release.
The farmers in Karnataka representing various agricultural outfits recently staged protest against the water release. They insisted the officials to reduce the discharge to 5,500 cusecs, later as tension increased, the officials actually reduced it to 7,500 cusecs. The farmers continued to demand the water level to reach the optimum level of 2,284 feet as against the present level of 2,282.Officials at the Tamil Nadu PWD, however, ascertained that the level of inflow will not affect the water release of 14,000 cusecs from the Mettur dam.
