Renowned cardiologist Dr MS Valiathan, aged 90, passed away on Wednesday night at Manipal Hospital in Karnataka. Dr Valiathan was the Founder and Director of the Sri Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology and a distinguished figure in the field of cardiology. Dr Valiathan, a first-batch student of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, had a prolific career that spanned across prestigious institutions globally. He served as the first Vice Chancellor of Manipal University and was on the faculty of Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr Valiathan’s contributions to health technology earned him national and international accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan in 2005 and the Chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French government in 1999. He was also honored with the Samuel P Asper International Award by Johns Hopkins University Medical School for his contributions to medical education.

Dr Valiathan, a former President of the Indian National Science Academy and National Research Professor to the Government, leaves behind a legacy of pioneering work in medical education and research. He hailed from Mavelikara and is survived by his spouse Ashima and children Manna and Manish.

His demise marks the end of an era in the field of cardiology and medical education, with colleagues and students mourning the loss of a visionary leader and compassionate physician.
