PUDUCHERRY: Trade unions of textile mill workers on Monday urged the government to remove uprooted trees in the AFT mill campus and reopen the mill. AITUC leader V S Abhishegam said the unions wanted a panel to be set up to renovate the AFT mills, as announced by the Chief Minister in the last Assembly session.In a resolution adopted at a meeting of the All Textile Mill Trade Union—comprising unions from all the three mills in the UT— chaired by A Ammanathan (INTUC) on January 14, they demanded that the government ensure the procurement of textile products produced by the Anglo-French Textiles, Swadeshi and Bharathi mills for implementing its free schemes. The unions also wanted the government to urge the Centre to sanction `500 crore for the modernisation of the AFT, Swadeshi and Sri Bharathi Textile mills.They urged CM Rangasamy to lead a delegation comprising Union Minister V Narayansamy, MP P Kannan and the Chief Secretary to New Delhi for this purpose.
