BANGALORE: Roads are the biggest issues for many areas at Bangalore city and the residents of Kuvempunagar is not an exception. They expect the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to asphalt the roads as early possible since most of the roads are filled with potholes. If the condition of the Church Road is any indication, it seems that the BBMP did nothing to mitigate the problems of Gangamma Circle and other areas in the ward. Many of the roads were cut either to lay water pipes or electric cables, but no effort was made to fill the gaps, thus causing lot of problems for two-wheeler riders. “These roads are not fit for use. These roads were asphalted more than 10 years ago. It is very unfortunate that no one has taken any initiative to asphalt the roads,’’ said a resident of Kolathur Layout.Under ground drainage pipes that are choked with waste material make life miserable for the residents. They complain that Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) men take more time to clear the clogged UGD pipes. ‘’It has become a nuisance for us. Blockage of UGD pipes has become a daily feature in this area,’’ says P Vijayakumari, a resident of Church Street. Most of the open drains need immediate attention of the BBMP authorities. It would be difficult to locate the drains at few areas due to garbage and silt. Some of the vacant places have been converted as garbage dumping places. ‘’Many drains are full of weeds and garbage. We have to face a lot of problems during monsoon. I expect the BBMP men to clear the weeds from the open drains,’’ says C Ramya, a resident of Muniramaiah Colony.Meanwhile, Yashodamma, Corporator says, “The BBMP had sanctioned Rs 3 crore last year to take up development works in the ward. We have constructed 76 houses for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes families under 22.75 percent scheme of the BBMP. We have also facilitated construction of toilets for more than 150 families belonging to other backward castes apart from asphalting roads and strengthening drains,’’ adds Yashodamma. She further went on to say that the focus will be on rain water harvesting this year. ‘’We have dug 26 borewells last year to mitigate water woes in the ward but four of them failed to yield water. We have allocated Rs 40 lakh for implementing rain water harvesting this year. It will help increase the ground water table in the area and re-charge the borewells,’’ said the corporator adding that all the roads will be asphalted as soon as the laying of UGD pipes is completed.
