A 71-year-old retired deputy commandant of CRPF has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead his younger brother and seriously injuring his nephew over a property dispute here, police said on Sunday.
"The accused, identified as Rajbhan Singh, allegedly shot dead his brother Raj Lalan (61), a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, yesterday with his licensed rifle in in Dhekha locality here," SP (City) Ashutosh Pandey said.
The condition of Rajbhan's nephew Neeraj is stated to be critical, police said, adding that the incident took place in a full public view.
The police officer said that Rajbhan and his brother were at loggerheads over possession of a house purchased by the latter some 15 years ago.
"Lalan had purchased the house and given it to Rajbhan to stay after the latter retired from CRPF," the SP said.
He said that when Lalan retired as DYSP, he asked his elder brother to vacate the house which the latter refused.
"Lalan then filed a case in court which ruled in his favour, following which he approached the local municipal corporation saying that his house is in bad shape and it should be razed to the ground," Pandey said.
Acting on Lalan's application, a civic team reached the spot on Saturday and started razing the house, which was opposed by Rajbhan.
"Rajbhan was then taken to a nearby police station and was not allowed to leave until the house was demolished," the officer said.
"After he was allowed to leave, Rajbhan allegedly brought his licensed rifle and shot his brother dead. He also fired at Lalan's son Neeraj who sustained serious injuries," Pandey said.
Locals caught Rajbhan and thrashed him before handing him over to police who in turn admitted him in a hospital.
