KOCHI: The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) will soon prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Rs 1,400-crore ring road project that will offer better connectivity to the east and west suburbs from the Vyttila Mobility Hub.As the hub is expected to be the centre of city’s transportation activities in the coming years, the ring road, aimed at easing traffic congestion in the city, is likely to play a key role in the overall development of the Vyttila area. As per the plan, the ring road, which will start from the Vyttila Mobility Hub, will touch Kaniyampuzha, Seaport-Airport Road and extend towards the eastern side through Infopark, Pookkat t u p a d y and Smart City area to reach Kalamassery HMT and from there will link the Vallarpadam Container Terminal Road. It was Benny Behanan MLA who submitted the proposal for the project which was approved by the State. “The NATPAC will look into the possibilities of building the ring road from Kundannoor.Since the Edappally bypass is too congested, we should look into the possibilities of exploring new routes and construct new roads to meet the traffic requirements,” Benny Behanan told City Express. He added that the new ring road will offer better connectivity to areas that witness huge development activities like Smart City, Infopark and HMT.The length of the proposed road is 15 km.“As per the proposal, the ring road will be four-lane and a vehicle can cover 15 km stretch in 10 minutes. The new route will not only help in saving the time, but also ease the traffic congestion,” he added. When asked about the mode of implementation, the MLA said it was too early to comment on that.“Once the DPR is completed, we will look into the possibilities of executing it.Various issues, inclduing land acquisition, have to be tackled. Only then will the State Government decide on whether to implement it in Public-Private Partnership mode or not,” he said.
