Earlier this week, around 11am, a Tata Magic vehicle stopped at Valliammal College for Women, Anna Nagar East, and a first-year student got down. She hurried into the college, while the driver, 47-year-old S Ravi, took a breather. The girl was Ravi’s first customer. Ravi recently started providing a pick-up and drop facility to women students of Valliammal College.“As travelling using Chennai’s public transport is dangerous and unsafe for women, I hired the this cab service ,” says the student’s father, Ln K Mohan, who accompanied his daughter on her first trip in Ravi’s vehicle. “Earlier, I used to pick-up and drop my daughter to college in my car, but it would hamper my work. So this option has come as a blessing.”Ushering in a new change, Ravi, who provides a pick-up and drop facility to students of Sankalp, a school for special children, in Anna Nagar, got inspired from real life to start this new service, exclusively for women students. “My daughter studies in the third year in Valliammal College. I used to ensure that I was in charge of her commute back and forth as I was always concerned about her safety,” says Ravi. “I felt other fathers too would be equally concerned about their daughter’s well being. Hence, I started this new service.”Currently, he is providing service exclusively to the students of Valliammal College around a few areas, including Mogappair West and Nolambur. The charges vary as per the location of his clientele. As Ravi rushes off to attend to the pick-up of school students, he proudly displays a photo, which shows him receiving an award for his good work of transporting the students of Sankalp for eight years. “This job gives me immense satisfaction. Women students need a security of travelling alone. I’ve no qualms about plying this service for only one woman student currently. Enquiries are pouring in,” he says. At the time of this report, Ravi has added two more women students. (To contact Ravi, call 9566198940)
