New Delhi: Even as the issue of purification of the Sabrimala temple following the entry of two women was raised, the Supreme Court refused to urgently hear the contempt petitions against the chief priest of the famed temple in Kerala.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that the matter has already been fixed for January 22 and that he sees no reason to advance the date of the hearing now.
Appearing for two women petitioners, advocate PV Dinesh sought to persuade the CJI about the urgency of the plea.
Dinesh said that he felt constrained to mention the contempt petitions now since the chief priest has been acting in complete breach of the Supreme Court's verdict. The lawyer added that the temple was closed for purification after two women entered the sanctum sanctorum on Wednesday.
But Justice Gogoi was unmoved.
"We have fixed all the matters on January 22. The bench has been constituted. We don't believe in scheduling and rescheduling cases and benches like this," retorted the CJI.
Justice Gogoi further observed: "We have worked out our schedule as per the date already fixed. We won't change it now."
In November, a Constitution Bench, while taking up a bunch of almost four dozens review petitions against the September 2018 verdict, had fixed the matter for open court hearing on January 22.
